Exploring the Grimdark Realm of Aethelgard
Today I crossed the Blackrun River into the heart of what locals call the Grimdark Realm. The moment I set foot on its ashen soil, the air grew heavy with the scent of rot and iron. Even the daylight seemed to falter here, dimmed by an unseen veil. I knew I was no longer in the Aethelgard I had mapped for years.
This place feels older, crueler. The trees twist into shapes that mock the living, and the ground whispers with each step. I could not turn back, however; my mission demanded I find the source of the strange blight that has been creeping into the borderlands.
The First Omen
I had walked for barely an hour when I noticed the silence. No birds, no insects—only the crunch of my boots on brittle leaves. Then I saw it: a circle of stones, arranged with unnatural precision. At its center lay a broken sword, its blade blackened and etched with runes that pulsed faintly.
I knelt to examine the weapon, but a sharp pain seized my hand. A drop of blood fell onto the runes, and the ground trembled. Consequently, shadows began to coalesce into a form that towered over me. The Nightshade Wraith had risen.
- Appearance: A mass of shifting darkness, studded with malevolent eyes that glowed like embers.
- Attack: It reached for me with claws of pure shadow, and I felt my strength drain away.
- Escape: I threw a vial of sunsalt I had prepared for just such an encounter. The wraith recoiled, screaming, giving me time to flee into a narrow ravine.
Refuge in the Hollow
I stumbled into a cave hidden behind a waterfall. The walls were carved with ancient symbols—some I recognized from old grimoires, others that made my skin crawl. This hollow had once been a sanctuary for those who resisted the grimdark realm’s influence.
Furthermore, I found a journal left by a previous explorer, dated nearly a century ago. She wrote of a “shadow heart” that beats beneath the land, corrupting everything it touches. If she was correct, then the blight is not a natural disaster but a deliberate act of malice.
Meanwhile, I must decide whether to press deeper into the Grimdark Realm or return to warn the council. My supplies are low, and my arm still throbs where the wraith’s touch grazed me. But I cannot ignore the truth I have uncovered.
What Lies Ahead
I have chosen to continue. The grimdark realm demands courage, not caution. Tomorrow I will seek the shadow heart, guided by the dead explorer’s map. If I succeed, Aethelgard may be saved. If I fail, my journal will stand as a warning to those who follow.
Nevertheless, I write this entry to remind myself why I came here: not for glory, not for treasure, but because the darkness must be confronted. And perhaps, in the deepest shadows, even a grimdark realm can reveal a spark of light.
