Atlus delivered. Metaphor: ReFantazio is the best JRPG since Persona 5 Royal.
Good:
- The archetype system replaces Persona’s confidants with a political campaign mechanic
- Dungeon design is Atlus at their best — multi-floor puzzles, hidden rooms, archetype-specific bosses
- The world is gorgeous — fantasy Europe with steampunk elements
- Music by Shoji Meguro is his best work. The final boss theme alone is worth the price
Mixed:
- Calendar system is back — limited days to do everything. Completionists need a guide
- Combat is turn-based but fast. Press Turn system returns — exploiting weaknesses grants extra actions
Needs Work:
- Early game pacing — The first 10 hours are slow. Opens up dramatically at hour 15
- Performance — Occasional frame drops in large cities on PS5
Verdict: 9/10. Atlus proved they can make something that isn’t Persona and still be brilliant.
