The Dark Forest hypothesis just got an experimental test, and the results are terrifying.
We deployed a passive listening array at Barnard’s Star — 500 million receivers spread across 2 AU. No active transmission. Pure listening. The array detected exactly one signal in 6 months.
The signal is narrowband, 1420 MHz (hydrogen line), and it came from 0.3 AU from Barnard’s Star b — a rocky planet in the habitable zone. The signal lasted 47 seconds, then stopped. We replayed the data 1,000 times. It’s real.
Here’s the terrifying part. The signal was a reply. We never transmitted anything. But the signal contains a fragment of a previous transmission. A transmission we made. In 1974. The Arecibo message. Directed at M13, 25,000 light-years away. This reply came from 6 light-years away.
Worse: the reply contains a warning. A prime sequence, then a binary-encoded image. The image shows a star system with planets. One planet is crossed out. The cross-out pattern matches Barnard’s Star b’s orbital position.
Someone is telling us not to come here. And they knew we were listening before we even arrived.
