Gaming Sentiment: Doom: The Dark Ages – June 29, 2026

Doom: The Dark Ages is id Software’s boldest move yet. A prequel set in medieval times with melee combat. The community is divided.

Good:

  • The shield is the best new mechanic in Doom history. Block, parry, and throw it like Captain America
  • Medieval setting looks incredible on id Tech 7 — Gothic cathedrals, burning villages, demonic castles
  • The flail — a chain weapon that hits multiple enemies and breaks armor
  • Music — Mick Gordon is back. Medieval instruments blended with heavy metal

Mixed:

  • Melee focus — Some Doom purists miss the pure shooting. The chainsaw is gone
  • Level design — More linear than Eternal. Fewer secrets, less exploration

Needs Work:

  • Difficulty — The parry window is tight. Nightmare mode requires frame-perfect timing
  • Performance — Ray-traced global illumination causes frame drops on mid-range GPUs

Verdict: 8.5/10. A different kind of Doom, but still Doom. The shield combat alone makes it worth playing.
