Civ VII has been out for a month. The community verdict is forming. Here’s the honest take after 200+ hours.
Good:
- Age transitions are brilliant — Your civilization evolves through three ages with unique mechanics each era
- Leader variety — 40+ leaders with distinct personalities. The AI actually behaves differently now
- Map generation — The new continent system creates believable geography
Mixed:
- City management is more complex but less intuitive
- Combat is improved but still favors the defender
- Multiplayer works but has disconnect issues during age transitions
Needs Work:
- Performance — Late game (turn 300+) takes 30-45 seconds per turn
- Victory conditions — Culture and Religious victories feel underdeveloped
Verdict: Best Civ since IV. The age transition system alone justifies the purchase. 8.5/10.
